OPENAI’S NEW MODEL CAN THINK THROUGH ITS ANSWERS

👀 TLDR:

In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover OpenAI’s new o1 model. Code-named Strawberry, it promises a new approach to AI, allowing ChatGPT to take its time and reason through a problem rather than spit out answers. We also have news on the tech CEO hacking a rival, Amazon putting ads in its Rufus chatbot, Ronaldo’s social media milestone, and more fun than you can shake your fist at with our Stat, App and Quote of the Week!

Our Top Take 🎬

🙉🤔 OpenAI - Strawberry o1 Model Can Apply Reason to Answers

For AI, bigger is not necessarily better. We need more than scaling up LLMs to get to where we want to go. OpenAI has recognized this with o1 (Strawberry), a new model that helps ChatGPT ‘reason’ its answers. It’s not more powerful as such; it’s trained to think differently. You’ve probably seen examples of AI being tricked with simple riddles, but o1 isn’t so easily beguiled. It thinks through its answers in logical steps – even correcting itself. It’s slower and more expensive than existing models like GPT-4o, nor does it have access to the live web, but it’s designed to complement rather than replace. OpenAI says you should still use GPT-4o for day-to-day stuff, and it does seem to be targeting scientists, mathematicians, and superstar developers 👋 who need to solve complex problems. Whispers, too, that o1 will play a significant role in GPT-5. #StrawberryFeels Read more here.

📲 App of the Week: SocialAI

Have you ever wanted to be the ‘main character’ (as the kids put it) on social media? Well, now you can, thanks to AI. SocialAI creates a social media feed for you with an infinite collection of AI friends generating responses and conversation. Yes, we know it’s not for everyone - indeed, it might feel a bit weird - but it’s fun in an experimental sense, and these apps may have an important future in areas like mental health. Get SocialAI here if you want to have a look for yourself.

📈📉 ChatGPT – Increased Numbers Using It as A Search Engine

Ahead of the release of SearchGPT, a report says more of us are using chatbots in lieu of search engines. 8% (up from 7% last month) now use ChatGPT instead of options like Google and Bing. If you’re thinking of switching up how you search, you may want to give Perplexity a go as its citation-backed answers are a little more reliable than ChatGPT – for now. #ChangingSearch Read more here.

⚽ Ronaldo Scores 1 Billion. We thought it’d be Taylor or Selena, but Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first to hit 1B followers across multiple platforms. Details here.

🤖 Want Some Ads with Your Chat? Amazon is experimenting with putting adverts in its storefront AI chatbot, Rufus. Yeah, that won’t be annoying at all. Get details here.

👋 Klarna Goes Big on AI. Klarna has ended SaaS partnerships with Salesforce and Workday, replacing them with internally built AI. It’s ruffled a lot of feathers. See why here.
