👀 TLDR:

In this week’s What’s Appening…..It’s Glowtime! Apple unveiled iPhone 16, Watch 10, and more hardware, but most of the interesting AI stuff will be coming later in the year. We also have news on Google vs. DoJ round two, early reviews of SearchGPT, Claude for Enterprise, and how an ingenious scammer used AI to make a fortune in music. Also be sure to check out our App, Stat, and Quote of the Week.

Our Top Take 🎬

📱🍏 Apple – iPhone 16, AI, Hearing Aids, and A New Button at Glowtime

We were left with the sense of “more of the same” as Apple unveiled iPhone 16 and other hardware at Glowtime. Bigger screens & better chips and batteries, as usual, and a shiny new button on iPhone for the camera (a bit worrying that it was the biggest talking point). We got just a little dash of AI – for now. Visual Intelligence, Apple’s AI image recognition technology, looks nifty. Yet most of the Apple Intelligence announcements were recycled from WWDC in June, and many of the AI features, including the AI-powered Siri, won’t be ready when iPhone 16 goes on sale. Other highlights included a thinner Apple Watch Series 10 with sleep apnea detection, and Air Pods will soon be able to double up as medically approved hearing aids. All a bit underwhelming despite a few neat tweaks to existing products. Glowtime lacked pizzazz, but the significance of the event will arguably only be felt when Apple Intelligence rolls out in full later in the fall. Then, we can test Tim Cook’s assertion that iPhone 16 was built “from the ground up” for AI. #AppleGlowtime Read more here.

📲 App of the Week: Today’s Front Pages

Yes, this week we’re spotlighting one of our own. Built by 3Advance (case study), this is one of our longest running apps, and one of the most popular. Originally built for the Newseum way back in 2011, the app displays newspaper front pages from around the globe. Our favorite feature is the widget that displays your chosen front page right on your iPhone’s home screen. Right now, we’re redesigning the app to align with the new website at frontpages.freedomforum.org. For now, you can still check out the current version on iOS or Android.
