What’s Appening: SearchGPT, AI in iOS 18, Apple Maps, AI Alexa, Harris “Breaks” Zoom
SEARCHGPT IS OPENAI’S ANSWER TO GOOGLE SEARCH
👀 TLDR:
In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover the impending launch of SearchGPT. OpenAI’s “answer engine” is in the testing phase, but once released, it may challenge the hegemony of Google Search, a product that many of us believe has let us down in recent years. In other news, we look at iOS 18 missing out on Apple Intelligence, Amazon’s plans for an AI Alexa, Kamala Harris ‘breaking’ Zoom, and the increasing importance of the crypto vote in an election year. Finally, our GPT of the Week has you covered on all bases for pursuing a career in tech.
Our Top Take 🎬
🔎🤖 OpenAI – Testing Begins on Potential ‘Google Killer,’ SearchGPT
Google Search has long felt broken, plagued by ads and irrelevant SEO content, and failing to evolve with the rest of the web. Now, OpenAI has given us a glimpse of a remedy with its “answer engine,” SearchGPT. Currently in testing, the stress is on the relevance of the results, skipping over the adverts and junk content to get the answer you want – backed with source citations. Now, we don’t want to portray OpenAI as a lone savior, as there’s already a fantastic AI answer engine out there – Perplexity AI (try it for free here). Perplexity merges search with the power of LLMs and, while still in its infancy, is now the “search engine” of choice for some of us here at 3A. As well as finding results, and answering questions, follow-up questions allow you to go deeper, easier, and with confidence as it includes references to all sources. SearchGPT will likely mimic some of the user experience from Perplexity but with the power of OpenAI’s core tech — and brand. Google has Gemini AI up its sleeve, yes, but 57% of its revenue – $175 billion! – comes from Search. No doubt OpenAI wants some of this market. #GoogleKillers Read more here.

📈📉 Zoom – Harris Phone Call Breaks Simultaneous User Records
If you think getting a few dozen colleagues together for a Zoom call is impressive, think again. Presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris managed to squeeze around 136K (a Zoom record) on simultaneously for a “White Women for Harris” election fundraiser. The call was glitchy, and many had to bail out to watch on YouTube instead, but it’s still impressive that Zoom (another in-house fav of ours) managed to get so many people on at the same time. #KamalaBreaksZoom Read more here.

🪙🗣️ BTC – Conference Sees Presidential Candidates Make Crypto Pitches
Bitcoin’s annual conference was in Nashville over the weekend, notable for keynote speeches by both Donald Trump and fellow presidential hopeful Robert Kennedy Jr. Both called for Bitcoin to be a strategic asset held by the United States treasury (Kennedy went further than Trump). While Kamala Harris did not attend, she is rumored to be reaching out to crypto leaders for a reset of relations, seen as at an all-time low under the Biden Administration and current SEC leadership. Crypto will be an important issue in the election. Around 67 million Americans hold it, and many within that group see the candidates’ stance on it as a deal-breaker. #CryptoElections Read more here.
