CAN NIKITA BIER CAN JUMPSTART X?

👀 TLDR

In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover the news that X has landed Nikita Bier as Head of Product. Known as the ‘King of Viral Apps,’ Bier has already made some big promises, including making our timelines more relevant. He joins X in what feels like a pivotal moment for the future of the platform. We also have news on Apple reportedly getting help from OpenAI and Anthropic on Siri, a big win in court for Meta over AI copyright, Microsoft’s AI system diagnosing better than expert physicians, Cursor launching a web app, and more!

🎬 Our Top Take

📱📵 X – Musk Lands Virality Expert Nikita Bier as Head of Product

While most of the news surrounding Elon Musk today has centered on President Trump’s threats to deport him (yes, really), there is some very good news for the world’s richest human. He’s just hired Nikita Bier as X’s new Head of Product. Bier is a serial entrepreneur, known for creating viral apps like tbh and Gas (and selling them on for massive profits). With X, he will be able to test his approach to virality at a global platform scale. He understands what makes app consumers tick, especially Gen-Z (a key demographic for X). Bier’s arrival comes at a pivotal moment for X. By and large, it feels like it has held off the competition from ‘Twitter clones’ like Bluesky and Mastodon, but we are approaching the point where Musk’s promises – financial trading services, payments, the “everything app” – have still not been implemented. Above all, the interesting thing will be to see how Bier works with X’s integrated AI tool, Grok. He’s already promised to use Grok to enable “hyper-relevant timelines.” As everyone knows, the main gripe with X right now is seeing things you DON’T want to see, so if Bier makes good on this promise, he’ll be off to a great start. #GetTheBiersIn Read more here.

📲 App of the Week: Cursor Web App

Cursor, the ultra-successful AI coding workspace reportedly used by half of Fortune 500 companies, has launched a new web app. It’s all part of a big bet on autonomous AI coding agents, which you can prompt with natural language. With the web app, this goes a step further, allowing developers to send commands to their cloud-hosted agent team from any device – laptop, tablet, or even a phone browser – allowing the agents to work in the background on any device while you tackle something else. Find out more about the Cursor web app here.

🧐 Stat of the Week: 4X Accuracy

📈📉 Microsoft – New AI Agent Diagnoses Patients Better than Doctors

This is, perhaps, the AI use cases we really want to see. Microsoft has unveiled an AI system that it claims is four times better than human physicians at diagnosing complex cases in patients. The system faced an “intellectually demanding” test and was able to diagnose eight out of ten cases correctly; a board of human physicians only managed two out of ten on the same test. The news caused a stir, causing some to proclaim a new era of low-cost healthcare and others to worry about mass unemployment among healthcare workers. We wouldn’t get carried away with either sentiment just yet. #AIDoctors Read more here.

🆘 SOS. Apple is reportedly considering letting OpenAI and Anthropic power Siri rather than in-house AI. We’ve said it many times before – Apple really dropped the ball on this. Story here.

👎 Beast Backlash. Jimmy MrBeast” Donaldson has removed an AI thumbnail generator after a backlash from creators, some of whom said their work was being stolen. Details here.

©️ Copy Fight. Meta has won a significant lawsuit brought by a group of authors trying to stop AI training on their work. Just one legal battle of many, but it could be an important bellwether. More here.

🚀 Turbo Launch. An AI studio promises that it can launch up to 100,000 startups per year, all without needing technical expertise. A new future or PR nonsense? Decide for yourself here.
