What’s Appening: AI Deepfakes, Samsung & Perplexity, Grok & Telegram, Apple Leaks

AI KATE AND PAUL CELEBRATE 15 YEARS OF 3ADVANCE 🙃

👀 TLDR

In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover the scramble for governments to pass laws criminalizing the misuse of AI deepfakes. New AI image and video generators pose significant concerns, and some politicians are taking extreme measures to highlight the issue. We also have news on partnerships between Samsung & Perplexity and xAI & Telegram, as well as our App and Stat of the Week. Oh, and it’s 3Advance’s birthday, so check out how we are celebrating below.

🎬 Our Top Take

🚫🎑 DeepFakes – Lawmakers Struggle to Catch Up with AI Generators

Yesterday, Laura McClure, a New Zealand lawmaker, held up an image of herself in the NZ parliament. It was an AI-created deepfake showing a naked photo of McClure. The politician has received praise for highlighting the issue, but it only scratches the surface of a problem that feels like it is spiraling out of control quickly. The new Pope and rock legend Joe Bonamassa were both featured in viral AI deepfake scams in recent days. Today, TIME magazine has a special report that highlights how Google’s VEO 3 – the company’s latest AI video generator – can be used to create videos of conflict, riots, election fraud, and just about anything else that could help misinformation spreaders succeed in their goals. Suddenly, every major nation is trying to rush through bills to criminalize the misuse of deepfakes, including the Trump Administration, with President Trump signing the bipartisan (it still happens) Take It Down Act on May 19th. The Take It Down Act is a good first step as it helps stop individuals from being targeted with sexualized deepfakes, but, as ever, when governments are trying to regulate such technology, critics wonder whether a) it goes far enough and b) whether it looks far enough into the future. Because this tech is only going to get better. #DeepProblems Read more here.

📲 App of the Week: ASI: One App

The number one criticism of the crypto sector is that for all the potential of blockchain technology, there are very few products built with real utility. It was of interest, then, when the Artificial Super Intelligence project released its ASI: One app, which is basically a decentralized AI chatbot app built on the company’s proprietary model, EAEM. Is it better than ChatGPT? Nope, but it is different, interesting, and incredibly ambitious (it’s also free). ASI is promising big things by marrying AI and blockchain (a union that some experts believe is incompatible), especially in the area of AI agents. Check out the app for iOS here and Android here, even if it is just out of curiosity that a web3 brand launched a product not focused on trading more crypto.

🧐 Stat of the Week: 52/100

📈📉 TikTok – More than Half of Mental Health Videos Post Misinformation

We all know that social media can be a double-edged sword for mental health. A testament to that is a study on the top 100 mental-health-focused TikTok videos, which found that over 50% posted misinformation. Some of it seems innocuous – holistic therapies, etc. – but the overall issue appeared to be the focus on quick fixes for complex problems. #NoQuickFixes Read more here.

🇰🇷 Samsung Intelligence. Phone giant Samsung is closing in on a deal with Perplexity that would see the startup’s AI capability integrated into its devices. Story is here.

🤖 Grok 🤝 Telegram. More partnerhships news, as xAi has agreed a deal with Telegram to integrate Grok into the latter’s ****chats. Win-win for both sides here. Details here.

🍏 New Apples. Ahead of next week’s WWDC 2025, which we will certainly be covering, Apple is leaking lots of new product details. Take a look here if you can’t wait.

🔐 Account Access. Move over “Sign in with Google.” OpenAI is testing a new feature that will allow you to use your ChatGPT account to sign into other apps. More here.

📍 Meanwhile at 3Advance

On Sunday, 3Advance turned 15. 🎉 That’s right, a decade and a half! Since 2010, we’ve been building platforms and products, learning from each other and those we work with, and every day trying to be better than we were the day before. There are currently 11 core team members at 3Advance, so what would any football-loving founder do? You’ve guessed it. Paul lined us all in a 3-5-2 soccer formation. The lineup (and his reflection on this incredible milestone) pretty much says it all - read it here. ⚽
