SNAP SPECTACLES SACRIFICE FASHION FOR FUN

👀 TLDR

In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover YouTube’s plans to help smaller creators get discovered. The Hype button promises to beat the algorithm that constantly feeds bigger accounts, but will it work? We also have news on Snap’s huge (literally) AR glasses, iPhone designer Jony Ive partnering with OpenAI on hardware, Amazon’s Project Amelia for sellers, a movie studio’s AI deal, as well as our App, Stat & Quote of the Week.

Our Top Take 🎬

📱📵 Hype Feature Offers Hope to Smalltime YouTubers

YouTube has a “Mr Beast Problem.” Big accounts get favored by the algorithm, get more views and followers, and then the wheel keeps turning. Users have been vocal in wanting the platform to enhance discovery for smaller creators. For example, many claim TikTok has taken YouTube’s crown for new music discovery. YouTube has bowed to the demands, introducing Hype to bypass the traditional recommendation algorithm. Hype is like a turbo-charged button for smaller accounts (fewer than 500K subscribers only), putting hyped accounts with quality content (like ours!) on a leaderboard to aid exposure. Initially, users will be limited to 3 hypes p/w. YouTube has portrayed this as organic – and we love the concept – yet we note it has plans to sell fans batches of hype for their favorite creators. That defeats the purpose. #HypedUp Read more here.

📈📉 Smartphones – Nearly All UK 12yos Own a Mobile Device

Over in the UK, there’s a huge discussion about kids’ access to social media and smartphone ownership. The latest findings show that just 3% of 12yos don’t have a smartphone (it’s around 9% in the US). Another study shows that 20% of British 3-4yos have access to a smartphone. Crazy, right?
