🆕 ♊ Google – A Big Leap in Multimodal AI with Gemini 2.0 Flash

There has been a lot of talk about a slowdown in the wow factor of new AI models, with recent releases from OpenAI and Meta barely making a ripple with the average person. But could Google buck the trend with Gemini 2.0 Flash? Venture Beat has described the release of Gemini 2.0 Flash as an “iPhone moment.” Hmmm. Firstly, it is much too early to say. Secondly, tech reporters are WAY too keen to shoehorn in that reference about any new product release. But why the excitement? Gemini 2.0 Flash (still in the experimental phase) is billed as AI with real-time multimodal capabilities. What that means in practice is that you will be able to, for example, take videos or photos on your phone and ask Gemini about them, opening up numerous possibilities in everything from education to health screening. You’ll have seen this sort of thing in Google’s (highly choreographed) demos, but now it’s going into the hands of ordinary users. Google, of course, is not alone in this multimodal race – OpenAI released Advanced Voice with Vision just four days ago – but it’s been pushing to get at the forefront of the consumer market.
