What's Appening: AI in Vision Pro, New Figma Features, Meta vs. EU (again), Coinbase & Stripe

VISION PRO WILL BOUNCE BACK WITH AI

👀 TLDR:

In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover the news that Apple may soon add AI capabilities to the Vision Pro. Auspiciously absent at WWDC 2024, where Apple told us they would be putting AI into everything but your favorite cereal, the company plans to remedy that. We also argue that it’s too soon to judge Vision Pro on disappointing sales. We also have news on Figma’s big update (yup, loads of new AI tools), Meta getting into trouble with the EU for about the billionth time, and Google’s biggest-ever expansion of Translate. Our Stat looks at the AI consultancy boom, What’s dAppening sees Stripe and Coinbase partner up to bring the world on-chain, and it’s a case of GPTS of the Week as we talk about over 3,000 of ‘em!

Our Top Take 🎬

🥽🍏 Apple – Report that AI Will Soon Be Coming to Vision Pro

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (Mr Reliable for Apple leaks) reports that the company is planning to bring Apple Intelligence (AI) to the Vision Pro fairly soon. Vision Pro users were disappointed at the lack of mention of AI for VisionOS at WWDC 2024, but Gurman says the company will soon remedy that, alongside a host of new features designed to make the Vision Pro more comfortable (changing the uncomfortable strap, yay!). We are also intrigued by Apple’s call to “Go Deeper” on Vision Pro in in-store demos, promising more personal experiences to show off the device’s capabilities. There’s also word that AirPods will be getting teeny-tiny infrared cameras, which will detect the Vision Pro user’s movements, changing the ‘direction’ of sound to improve the spatial audio experience, although these new AirPods won’t be on sale till 2026. The overall reaction has been mixed since the Vision Pro’s release in January, and sales have been slower than Apple expected. However, there are some caveats: Apple only started selling outside the US this week. It is also said to be working on a cheaper version of the device. We’re still excited. Are you? 📍 Meanwhile at 3Advance

Welcome Paul Swail! Darren discovered Paul back in March 2019 after reading several of his blogs on a nascent new technology labelled Severless. We have not looked back since, and with Paul’s guidance, we have built many applications using this tech paradigm that is more than a mere technology but a doctrine for ensuring we’re delivering business value through our technology choices. As Darren likes to say, “all code is a liability”, and with Serverless and managed services, that means writing as little code as possible! But enough about the tech… We are excited for Paul to assume the position of Director of Engineering at 3Advance, where he will continue building on the strong foundation already set. Paul will support Darren on our next mission, jumping in with both feet to this revitalized world of AI. If you’ve been following along you’ll know we’ve been pretty quick of the block on that one. Onwards!

🦾 GPT of the Week: 3000+ GPTs!!!

This week we’re not talking about just one GPT, but thousands, thanks to our latest podcast guest, Tylan Miller. Tylan talks to Paul about GPTs creating GPTs and why future techies should focus first on understanding APIs and data. Add automation and you can be a super creator too. Check it out on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon Music, and comment to join the convo.

🪙🤝 Stripe – Collaboration with Coinbase to “Bring the World On-Chain”

The work done by Coinbase to bring web3 to the mainstream deserves a lot of praise, and its latest partnership with payments behemoth Stripe is among the most important. The collaboration works in three ways: Stripe will integrate Coinbase’s USDC stablecoin on its payments network. Secondly, Stripe will make crypto payments faster across its network. Working the other way, Coinbase will bring Stripe’s onramp to CB Wallet. In short, everything is getting streamlined between the world’s important fiat payment processor and the undisputed leading platform in crypto adoption. #StripeBase Read more here.
