APPLE SET FOR BIGGEST DESIGN OVERHAUL IN YEARS

👀 TLDR

In this week’s What’s Appening, we report on Apple’s (reported) revamp, impacting the design, navigation, and operating systems of iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Bloomberg states that Apple will unveil the changes at WWDC 2025 in June. 🎬 Our Top Take

📱🍏 Apple – Major Product Design and OS Changes Are Coming

Most techies are in agreement that Apple’s WWDC events have been a little underwhelming in recent years. Yes, we got the Vision Pro reveal in 2023 and, um, the prelude to Apple Intelligence last year, but much of the conference is usually spent with Tim Cook et al. telling us that small aesthetic changes to existing products like “Dynamic Islands” are going to change our lives. Yet, could 2025 be different? Bloomberg reports that Apple is going for its most significant design changes in years at WWDC 2025 in June, fundamentally changing the operating systems of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. And here’s where it gets interesting: the changes, which are set to impact everything from icons to menus to apps to navigation, are based on the Vision Pro’s operating system. It’s all going to be part of the iOS 19, iPadOS 19m, and macOS 16 reveals at WWDC in June. We know little else for now, but come on, Apple, give us something to be excited about. #FreshApple Read more here.

📲 App of the Week: Ludocene

In this golden age of video gaming, there’s one issue that blights the sector – there are simply too many games, causing many great titles to remain undiscovered. There’s at least 100K on Steam, for instance, and more than twice that on the main app stores. A mooted solution is Ludocene, something like a dating app for video games. Like Tinder, you’ll do the proverbial swiping right and left, building up a portfolio of games that match your gaming personality. Ludocene is still in the prototype stage, but it’s gaining a lot of traction among gaming reporters after a successful Kickstarter campaign. You can sign up for early access and check out the prototype version here.

🧐 Stat of the Week: 95% AI

📈📉 AI – 1/4 of YC’s Startups Have Codebases Almost Fully AI Generated

We all know that AI is adept at coding, and that it will get better over time. Yet, it’s fascinating to see how quickly it’s being adopted. A case in point is that one in four of Y Combinator startups now have their codebases almost fully (around 95%) generated by AI. It all ties into a trend called “vibe coding,” i.e., using LLMs to code with natural language. #AICoding Read more here.

🔌 Concerning. X suffered a massive cyberattack on Monday. While widespread, the DDoS attack wasn’t sophisticated, which raises questions about the platform’s security. More here.

🧑‍⚖️ Plus Ca Change. It seems a new DoJ has the same old problems for Google. The Trump Admin, like the previous one, is pushing to break Google up, starting with Chrome. Story here.

🤝 Frenemies? Some interesting frictions in OpenAI and Microsoft’s partnership, including the former’s $12B investment in CoreWeave. Get a breakdown of what that means here.

📖 Turn the Page. Google co-founder Larry Page has a new startup, according to reports. As you might expect, it’s AI-based, focusing on product manufacturing. Story is here.
